Thuura Water Project
The women of Thuura had to walk 3 miles to the river several times per day to fetch water and wash clothes. This burdensome duty effectively consumed much of the available labor for this one critical task. Imani Kenya funded a pipeline/purification project to run water from the river to the community. The residents themselves — women digging the trenches, and men laying the pipe — did all of the manual work to complete the project. After months of hard work, purified water piped to all residents became a reality. This was a big first step toward positioning the community for economic transformation. Then a brainstorm occurred, and the idea of coffee farming was born.
